The first permanent settlement at Gállogieddi dates back to the late 18th century, established by the prominent reindeer herder Jon Nilsen and his family. Historically, this location served as an essential seasonal hub for migratory reindeer herders journeying each spring from their winter pastures in the Swedish interior (Jukkasjärvi parish) to the lush summer grazing grounds on the Norwegian coast. Over generations, many herders transitioned into permanent residency, developing a sophisticated, holistic economy that masterfully combined agriculture, coastal fishing, range industries, and traditional reindeer husbandry.
