M/S Grytøy is a 68-foot veteran passenger ferry built in 1954
She is the last remaining passenger boat built in wood in Northern Norway, and a typical representative of city boats/work routes that once connected islands and roadless hamlets with the cities along the coast.
M/S Grytøy operated in scheduled traffic in the Harstad area until she was sold out of the region in 1982.
M/S Grytøy was bought back at a forced auction in Oslo in 2011 by the Grytøy-Harstad Ferry Company and has since been completely renovated for NOK 30.000.000, – both underwater and above water at the North Norwegian Vessel Protection Center in Gratangen in the period 2013 to 2023. Since 2023, further restoration has taken place in Harstad under the auspices of the Grytøy Harstad Ferry Company.
M/S Grytøy is a floating museum that evokes fond memories for the entire population of the Harstad area, and the ferry route was the lifeblood for many decades. The characteristic Wickmann sound is legendary, and could be heard in the fjords, long before you saw the vessel. MS Grytøy has been renovated for totally NOK 30.000.000, – so now she is a beauty again.
So come on and join us for a historical tour in beautiful nature where we possible will see eagles and killer whales, if the nature is with us. You will get 3-hour fjord cruise for 12 passengers nearby area around Harstad: Kjøtta, Kjeøy, Toppsundet and Grøtavær.
Included is a visit/tour of the engine room, a visit to the bridge and guiding in the surrounding area.
and if the captain is completely confident that we can do it, we also get to try steering the ship. Then it’s just a matter of taking pictures, because it’s not every day you get to be «Captain» on a venerable boat like M/S Grytøy
You will also be provided with food and drinks on the trip, so you won’t have to go thirsty or hungry on board and if you want something extra to drink, you can buy that too.
